If you’re 45 years or older and dreaming of moving to Australia, you might have heard that age can be a limiting factor for some visa pathways. However, it’s not the end of the road! Australia offers few visa options and exemptions designed to help skilled workers, parents, and even partners migrate, even if they’re past the general age cut-off for permanent residency.
We explained it in details in the video below.
In this article, we’ll explore your options, exemptions, and tips for navigating Australia’s migration system if you’re over 45.
Australia’s migration program often imposes a 45-year age limit on certain visas, particularly for those seeking permanent residency through standard pathways.
This age cap is relatively recent, introduced in 2017 to replace the previous limit of 50 years. The change was made to reduce strain on the national healthcare system (Medicare), as older residents are more likely to require medical services.
However, there are exemptions and alternative pathways that can help you overcome this restriction and achieve your migration goals.
A DAMA is a special agreement between the Australian Government and certain regional areas. It provides flexibility in visa requirements, including age exemptions, for occupations in demand. We have extensively discusses DAMA Visa in various articles, you can read them here.

Visas you can obtain in a DAMA, like the subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage) and subclass 494 (Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional) can lead to permanent residency if you’re above 45. Please be aware if you apply for these visas in an area which is not recognised as DAMA (ie: Sydney Metro) the 45 age limit still applies.
With DAMA concessions, you could be eligible for permanent residency up to the age of 55.
If you’re a New Zealand citizen under a 444 Visa, you may be eligible for permanent residency without worrying about age restrictions. Same applies for partner of the 444 Visa holder which are on a 461 Visa
Professionals in Academic or Research Positions roles within Australian universities or research agencies are exempt from the age limit however you need to satisfy some criteria, check with one of our agents to understand if you could qualify for this age exemption.
If you have children who are Australian citizens or permanent residents, you could apply for a parent visa. The age limit doesn’t apply to parent visas, but you will need to meet balance-of-family and health requirements. Keep in mind that some parent visas, like the contributory subclass 143, require a significant financial commitment.
If you’re married to or in a de facto relationship with an Australian citizen or permanent resident, the age limit doesn’t apply to partner visas. Your relationship will need to meet specific criteria to qualify, but this is a common and straightforward pathway for many applicants over 45.
